WIS IMPLEMENTS NEW RADIOLOGY INFORMATION SYSTEM (RIS)

MedInformatix Makes WIS a Paperless, Fully-Integrated Outpatient Radiology Practice

Washington Imaging Services (WIS) continues our investment in the future so that we may better serve our patients and referring physicians with the May 3, 2010 implementation of our new MedInformatix Radiology Information System (RIS) for our Bellevue and Issaquah sites.

The new system is one of the most comprehensive RIS packages on the market today. It encompasses not only scheduling, registration, technologist and radiologist workflows, but also billing, EDI, custom reporting and collections.

Our new RIS system will allow us to achieve our goal of creating a paperless outpatient radiology center with fully integrated systems from end-to-end.

Improved Information Access and Exchange

Because our technologists and MDs move about continually among our various locations, information access and exchange—especially schedules, images and reports—are critical.

“MedInformatix offers WIS both user-friendliness and customization—two of our most important purchase considerations,” said Doug Gibson, President and CEO of WIS. “We also needed an end-to-end system that would integrate with our other software packages.”

“Our RIS is at the center of what we do,” Gibson noted. “It was important for us to find a solution that would integrate routine tasks handled by all our employees from all our offices. We find that it’s extremely easy to train employees in how to use MedInformatix, whether those people are new or have ten years of experience.”

The MedInformatix RIS Scheduling module lets front desk personnel book appointments for any MD or procedure at any location. Managers are able to customize templates and alerts to reflect the practice’s unique work rules. “We get a lot of walk-ins, which forces us to schedule on the fly. With MedInformatix we have the visibility and flexibility to accommodate these patients,” said Gibson.

Enhanced Capabilities for Operational Efficiency and Control

On the revenue management side, WIS’ MedInformatix system integrates closely with our clearinghouse provider, ZirMed. “Between ZirMed and MedInformatix, we can manage authorizations and eligibility, submit claims to over 500 different carriers electronically, track and analyze claim status and obtain our remittances electronically,” commented WIS Revenue Cycle Director Ton Brosio-Ward. "WIS also has a close relationship with Overlake Imaging Associates," Brosio-Ward stated, "and WIS is able to import radiology orders, patient reports and charge information directly from the hospital into the practice’s RIS."

Phase one of the RIS provides:

Phase two of the RIS will be implemented over the course of the summer and includes:

The Patient Portal, will give patients access to registration forms and information sheets that they can fill out on-line prior to arrival.

With the Physician Portal, referring physicians can submit appointment requests through the internet, check on the status of a patient’s appointment and print a customizable referral receipt. The system will also show the status of a patient’s report, reflecting whether it has been dictated or not. If it is complete, the physician can view the report on the screen and/or print it.

WIS will use the Executive Dashboard reporting system to provide real-time access to important management information which will help us identify practice trends, detect potential problems and increase overall operational effectiveness. Having the right information to make good business decisions is critical in today’s turbulent economy. Features of this part of the system include:
