New Low Cost MRI Eliminates Unnecessary Radiation Exposure in Patients with Small Bowel Disease

Historically, the role of CT in the management of patients with small bowel disease was firmly established as it is much faster, less susceptible to motion artifact, has excellent temporal and spatial resolution, and costs less than an MRI.

Today, a growing public awareness of the unknown effects of cumulative life-time ionizing radiation exposure has created an environment where both clinicians and patients are looking for an alternative to this exam. Fortunately, WIS has a solution.

We are proud to announce the introduction of MRI enterography for patients with Crohn's Disease or any other small bowel disease where there is a concern about cumulative radiation exposure from X-ray or CT imaging.

Recent advances in Siemens’ MRI technology has provided the ability to perform fast, accurate imaging of the abdomen and pelvis with better tissue contrast—all without the use of ionizing radiation found in CT exams. These capabilities make MRI enterography the ideal diagnostic tool for imaging patients with small bowel disease, especially Crohn’s Disease.

Large (up to 550 pounds) or claustrophobic patients can comfortably be imaged on our Siemens’ Espree large opening, short bore 1.5T MRI system. With the largest opening and shortest bore on the Eastside, the Espree high-field MRI provides a shorter, more relaxed and stress-free procedure for patients.

This new imaging study is priced the same as our CT enterography examination so there is no cost penalty to the patient.

To order a MRI enterography before we have new ordering pads in place, simply write MR enterography on the “Other MR” line of the WIS referral pad.
